Welcome to Little Owl Class

We are currently a mixed Reception/Year 1 class.  We are taught by Miss Allison and supported by Miss Trula, Miss Cox and Mrs Willcocks.

Our topics and themes are based on the children's interests throughout the year as well as seasonal events. 

Topics in the past have included:

Spring Term 2

Week beginning 9th March 2020.

This week Year 1 have been looking at two different historical heroes.  Henry Trengrouse and his life saving apparatus for use at sea and Florence Nightingale and the improvements she made to hospitals.  Foundation Stage have been using sand timers this week to see how many things they can do in a minute.  We also had great fun taking part in the school Holi/Rainbow Run for Sport's Relief.

Week beginning 2nd March 2020.

This week Year 1 have continued exploring super materials in science and carrying out tests to help Supertato find the correct material.  Foundation Stage have been continuing to create their own Supertato characters as well as ordering numbers and practising number formation.

Week beginning 24th February 2020.

This week we have started our new topic - 'Superheroes'.  Year 1 have been exploring super materials in science and carrying out tests to help Supertato find the correct material.  Foundation have been having fun creating their own Supertato characters and building superhero dens.

Spring Term 1

Week beginning 10th February 2020.

This week we have continued thinking about rainforests, the animals that live there and the effects of deforestation.  We have also been creating repeating patterns and using the iPad to create pictures.

Week beginning 3rd February 2020.

This week our environment has been rainforests.  On Wednesday we went to the Eden Project so that we could explore the rainforest biome.  We had a fantastic day out.

Week beginning 27th January 2020.

This week we have finding out about the desert and comparing it to the polar regions.  We have also been sorting coins, weaving and using the Beebots.

Week beginning 20th January 2020.

This week we have looking at the effect of global warming on the polar regions and thinking about ways that we can help reduce our carbon footprint.  We made polar bears using recycled materials.  We have also been reading red words and writing lists.

Week beginning 13th January 2020.

We have continued learning about the polar regions this week and found out which animals live at the North Pole and which animals live at the South Pole.  We have also been ordering objects by height, making playdough snowmen and ordering numbers.

Week beginning 6th January 2020.

Happy New Year.  This week we started thinking about our new topic - 'Where in the world?'  We looked at the polar regions and talked about the weather there before packing a suitcase with the clothes we would need.  We have also been creating relief prints, rolling, reading words and writing labels.

Autumn Term 2

Week beginning 9th December 2019

This week we have been performing our Nativity - 'A King is Born'.  We have also been continuing repeating patterns, cutting paperchains and printing with a stencil.

Week beginning 2nd December 2019

This week we have been getting the classroom ready for Christmas.  We decorated baubles and made paper chains.  We put Christmas books in our reading area and also set up a Nativity scene.

Week beginning 25th November 2019

This week we have been finding out about the festival of Diwali.  We have been creating our own rangoli patterns and Mehndi hand patterns.  We have also been naming and describing shapes and using a knife to cut.

Week beginning 18th November 2019

This week we have been finding out about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.  We found out how this festival is celebrated and looked at some objects that are special to Jews.  We have also been using torches, ordering numbers and mixing colours.

Week beginning 11th November 2019

This week we have been finding out about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies.  We looked at the painting 'Poppies' by Claude Monet and experimented with painting using little strokes and different thicknesses of paintbrush.  On Tuesday we wore odd socks to school as part of 'Anti-bullying' week.

Week beginning 4th November 2019

This week we have been learning about Bonfire Night and we have been using the oil pastels to create our own firework pictures.  We have also been recognising numbers, using a stopwatch app on the iPad and junk modelling.  It was National Outdoor Classroom day on Thursday and we made bird feeders to hang in the trees as part of this.

Week beginning 28th October 2019

This week we started thinking about our new topic - 'Celebrations'. We thought about what we celebrated and how we celebrated it.  On Thursday, after school, we had our Spooky Disco.  We have also been using oil pastels, writing labels and exploring magnets.

Autumn Term 1

Week beginning 14th October 2019

This week we have been identifying 2D shapes, rolling and taking pictures with the iPads. We have also been learning how use a knife to push things onto a fork.

Week beginning 7th October 2019

This week we have been thinking about Harvest and we had our Harvest Festival at school on Thursday.  On Tuesday we went to visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan to look at their Harvest displays.

Week beginning 30th September 2019

This week we have continued to think about Autumn.  We have been printing with paint and used Autumn colours and a range of objects to create our artwork.  We have also been learning how to use the Beebots.

Week beginning 23rd September 2019

This week we have started thinking about Autumn.  We have enjoyed exploring Autumn objects in our STEM area.  We have also been creating our own small world areas for the first time this week.

Week beginning 16th September 2019

This week we have continued to get to know each other.  We have also been using the resources in the outdoor role-play.  We have created shops, pirate ships, and superhero hide-outs as well as lots of other things.

Week beginning 9th September 2018

This week we have learnt our first five sounds in Read Write Inc, shared our 'All About Me' bags and explored the different areas of our classroom including our new Owl House.

Week beginning 2nd September 2019

Congratulations to all our new children who have completed their first two days at school.

We have been getting to know each other and making new friends.
